“Mental Toughness is one of those attributes that we all know when we see it. We can easily identify those who are mentally tough and those who are less so, but it is perhaps not quite so easy to define what exactly it is, and how it can be measured and developed. Peter Clough and Doug Strycharczyk have provided an excellent guide to the subject – “Developing Mental Toughness” which, though primarily aimed at the management coach , will be of value to anyone with an interest in the subject. They define mental toughness as “ The personality trait which determines in large part how people deal effectively with challenges stressors and pressure… irrespective of circumstances.”. Most managers could easily identify with this.
Professional Manager Winter 2016 Book Review The book begins by outlining the 4C’s model of mental toughness which identifies the four elements that contribute to the toughness model they use, Challenge, Confidence, Commitment and Control. There then follows a detailed description of the MTQ48 tool used to evaluate these four and this then leads on to a discussion of the issues raised by high and low levels of the elements in the model. Finally the authors provide a host of practical examples.
The early chapters are of necessity slightly academic in approach but later chapters will be of great interest to all managers and coaches aiming to develop individuals, as the concept of Mental Toughness is of great practical significance at all levels of any organisation. The book is easy to follow and provides an excellent insight into the world of mental toughness.”
