……. and How To Develop Them

As you progress further in your career it’s the quality of your soft skills rather than your technical proficiency that earns you promotion.

Ximena Vengoechea writes in the excellent Fast Company magazine that the 3 key soft skills are:

  • the ability to get things done
  • leadership
  • likeability.

She highlights the importance of these at the various career stages as well how to develop them, namely self-reflection, a frank conversation with your manager and exploring ways to learn them on the job.

I agree with her assessment of the three skills. As a CEO I look to hire or promote people who made things happen, could take responsibility and positively influence others to achieve an outcome and who were well liked and respected by their colleagues.  Whilst many organisations will assist you, the responsibility to develop those skills lies wholly and squarely with you.
