Mental Toughness

Description

Mental toughness describes how individuals deal mentally with stressors, pressure and challenge. It applies to everything that people do and embraces qualities such as mindset, character, resilience and grit.

Professor Peter Clough initially identified four key components of Mental Toughness – the 4 Cs – Control, Commitment, Challenge and Confidence. We are now able, through research, to see that these consist of 8 independent factors. We can measure this with the MTQPlus.

How We Can Help

Measure

Most personality measures focus on assessing behaviours (how we act) and attributes (how we feel) – the MTQPlus and MTQ48 explore how we think a key driver for behaviour and emotions. Both are normative measures, the test results for an individual are compared to a global norm group. This provides the capability to assess change and growth in Mental Toughness reliably.

Analyse

Included in the MTQ48 and MTQPlus are three separate feedback reports; development, coaching and assessor.

Develop

It is possible to create self-awareness about one’s level of Mental Toughness and, through this to optimise a person’s performance, agility and wellbeing. AQR and its partners have created options for developing Mental Toughness in individuals and teams through coaching and development programmes.
